Ten doilies and an afghan blanket

Trinket is seated on a sofa next to an
older woman (70's). The woman is reading
off a list of household do's and don'ts.
While Trinket patiently nods her head
"yes" to each rule, she silently is
counting all the doilies in the room.
Ten doilies and an afghan blanket.

Where did you get this?

"This is not a competition"
by Bloc Party is blasting.

Higgs is in the middle of a staff
meeting at JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab)
in Pasadena.

A scientist is standing at the front
of the conference room - next
to a mock up of a space elevator.
He is rambling on and on as he
points to the "space elevator".

Higgs, ignoring the speaker, discreetly
watches a Bloc Party fan video  on his
iPod nano.

The WOMAN seated next to Higgs slides him
one of the pink "R U A Sammeee?" cards.

Higgs is taken aback.

He yanks out his earphone. The music stops.

Higgs whispers to her, "Where did you get
this?"

She leans into his ear, "Calm down.
(in an ominous voice) This is not a game.
Terri said you love these things. Plus, I
thought it might be good for you to have
some fun while you're on leave."

Higgs stares down at the little pink card.

The Woman adds, "You’re welcome."

SCHOOL IS OUT

Dwin grabs an
"R U A Sammeee?"
card from the school
bulletin board.

A girl nearby rolls her eyes,
"R  U  so ridiculous?"

Dwin stops, "Sorry?"

The girl laughs and walks away.

Dwin stuffs the little pink card into
his backpack, he plugs into his iPod.

"This is not a Competition" plays
as Dwin exits the school.

15 boxes

Fifteen boxes
are stacked on
top of the twin
bed in Trinket's
"free room in
exchange for
care of
elderly
woman
room.

Trinket unpacks
her computer first.

SMACK ME! (and still in Starbucks)

Betty suddenly smiles, "How stupid are we?
Ten numbers in the sequence."

Barney nods, "Ten times."

She leans in and kisses Barney's forehead,
"Don’t over think it." She hands him her cell.

Barney opens his eyes, "A phone
number?  And we didn't see that?  If
it is this easy the game will suck.  You call."

Betty tilts her head and smiles, "Make the
call, sweetie."

Barney quickly punches in the 10 digits
and holds up his right hand, "Ringing."
He smiles while he listens, "Smack me."

Betty smacks him five.

Happy is cooking dinner

and watching Oprah as her son, BEN (15), enters.
Happy keeps an eye on him as he drops his
book bag and searches a cupboard.   She
announces, "We’re eating early."

Ben grabs a bag of chips, "But I’m starving
right now." And he stuffs some potato chips
into his mouth, "I'm a starving child in Indiana."

Happy grabs away the chips, "Don’t be
sarcastic about starving children, Ben.
It isn't funny."

"I'm funny."

"What?"

"I’m sorry."

Happy hands him the chips.

He smiles, "Thank you. I really do feel
like I’m going to faint."

"You're as dramatic as your father."

"Ha. Ha."  Ben sits on the kitchen counter,
"Did Dad call?"

"He called while I was outside gardening and
left a message," she hits the button on the
answering machine.

DAD'S VOICE: "Where are you guys?.. Okay.. it is..
What time is it here? It is 8:32 in the morning.
It is a beautiful day but I will be in meetings
at Sanyo until tonight. So I will try you tomorrow
around this same time. Everything is going well.
Can't wait to bring you both to see Japan. It
is quite something. Miss you both. Love you
."

BEEP

Ben, munching the chips, taps the pink card
that is sitting on the counter, "Que es?"

"I found it in the mailbox."

Ben studies it and turns it over
"R  U  A  Sammeee? Cool. An A.R.G."

Happy stops what she’s doing, "A wha wha wha?"

"Knock, knock, Mom. A.R.G. Al-ter-nate
Re-al-ity Gaaame."

"I speak english, Ben."

"Oh that’s right. (he smiles) Kidding. Okay, so
an A.R.G. is like... Its like a game.  Probably to
promote a movie or something."

"It's a game?"

Ben tilts his head, "Part of it is, but it also has a
story that you try to figure out around like puzzles."

Happy mocks him, "What is "like" puzzles?"

"You know what I mean, Mom. You try to figure
stuff out and you play with other people
that you meet on the computer  and you chat
with them about the game and the clues and
the story and the characters and sometimes
you meet the characters in the story and so
you are part of the story.  Like stepping
into a book."

Happy nods with no enthusiasm, "Sounds fascinating."

Ben gives it back, "Don’t be sarcastic."

Happy smiles, "Me?"

Trinket turns on her computer.

She sits down and
begins to type
furiously at the
keyboard.

Call Now!

Ben picks up the phone and punches in the number.

Happy holds up her hand, "What are you doing?"

Ben holds up the pink card, "Those tiny numbers on
the back are probably a phone number."

"Hang up now, Ben."

"Why?"

"You can’t just call some phone number off some
weirdo pink card."

"Why, Mom?"

Happy takes a beat..,"It could be dangerous."

Ben listens to the phone, "It’s ringing!"

Happy points at him and then the phone,
"Hang up right now, Mister.  Right now!"

Ben listens to the phone, "It’s a recording. (laughs)
Its sounds kinda lame - like a cheesy scary movie or
something. Here, listen.  C’mon, I’m replaying it."
Ben hands the phone to his Mom, "Just listen to it."

Happy’s scared to death but takes the phone, puts
it to her ear and hears:

A FALLING SCREAM

Meanwhile, in Santa Monica

Dwin is in on the end of his bed
with his cell phone to his ear.

a woman’s voice: "WHAT WAS THAT?"

a man’s voice: "JUST KEEP WALKING,
HONEY.
"

And in Pasadena,

Higgs is seated in his JPL office.
His cell is on "speaker".

a woman’s voice: "SOMEONE JUST SCREAMED!"

a man’s voice: "IT IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS."

woman’s voice: "BUT THAT'S A MAN!"

a man’s voice: "KEEP WALKING, HONEY!"

a woman’s voice: "WE CAN'T JUST LEAVE SOMEONE--"

a man’s voice: "WE ARE NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT
THIS RIGHT NOW! YOU NEED TO KEEP WALKING! C'MON!
NOW!
"

(the voices are further away)

a man's voice: "STOP LOOKING BACK!"
a woman's voice: "I'M NOT LOOKING AT ANYTHING!"

and then another man's voice whispers: "HELP ME."

People are horrible, sweetie, and it BEEPED.

Betty and Barney, both with an ear on
the cell, listen.

There is a loud "BEEP".

Betty clicks off her cell and turns
to Barney, "We’ve totally gotta help."

Barney nods, "Why didn't they stop?"

Betty leans her head on his shoulder,
"People are horrible, sweetie, and it beeped."

Barney clicks his cell, "I'm calling back."

It BEEPS in Indiana and

Happy stands there with the phone in her hand, "Now what?"

Ben shrugs, "It beeped."

Happy agrees, "It beeped."

It BEEPS in Santa Monica

and Dwin clears his throat,
"Hello.. I found your pink card."

It BEEPS again in Indiana.

Happy has the phone to her ear, "What should I say?"

Ben coaches, "Just say you want to help."

Happy catches her breath, "Do not tell your father that
I did this."

Ben reaches for the phone, "You're leaving our
conversation on their machine."

Happy's still catching her breath, "What?"

Ben hangs up the phone, "We're hanging up."

It BEEPS in Pasadena.

Higgs, with his cell to his ear, looks out his window,
"My name is Higgs and I’m just curious about
whatever is going on with you."

It BEEPS again in Chicago.

Betty speaks into the cell,
"We would like to help you."

And again in Santa Monica

Dwin paces his bedroom, "I want you
to feel free to contact me.
My email is -- "

And again in Indiana

Happy's on the phone again, "My email is Happy
and Paul.  One word.  Paul is my husband --"

Ben interrupts, "Don't give them the family email."

Happy places her hand over the phone's
mouth piece, "Why?"

Ben shakes his head, "Just don't, Mom."

And it BEEPS OFF.

Happy sighs, "I'm calling back."

And again in Pasadena

Higgs adds, "and don't forget the space between
and that's @ JPL dot gov."

And again in Chicago,

Betty speaks clearly, "That's Betty and Barney,
like the Flintstones. Or you can leave a message
on our cell--"

Barney leans in with,
"We share this cell for business."

Indiana again

Happy reads her notes into the phone,
"My new screen name is HappyRogers.
One word."

Ben laughs.

Santa Monica

Dwin is still pacing,
"I hope I can help you and I hope
to hear from you."

Chicago

Betty finishes up, "We look forward to
hearing from you."

Barney adds, "soon."

Pasadena

Higgs speaks softly into his cell,
"if this is even anything. If I have a
wrong number or this isn't anything,
no biggie. Right?"

Indiana

Happy's still rambling on the phone,
"Even though I usually only use
my cell phone for emergencies, I will
leave the ringer on, since I just
gave it to you. What else?"

Ben motions, "Hit the pound sign
and hang up."

Happy gives Ben the thumbs up,
"I'm hanging up now. Thank you and goodbye.'

Happy hangs up the phone, "What's next?"

"Now we wait."

Happy takes a deep breath, "For what?"

Ben half laughs, "You won't know until it happens."

One Times Square

one ts

It is dark in Addison's office except
for the glow of his computer screen.
Addison is on the phone.  He sits and
listens.  He then reaches over, hits the
pound sign and slowly hangs up.

Williamstown, Massachusetts

Trinket, with a ceramic elephant at
her side, suddenly stops typing
and stares at the screen.
